About GUTTA GOLF

The vision of Petey Pars

Our founder is a serial entrepreneur at heart and has a passion for creating. He grew up golfing with his grandparents, father, and friends but saw the game more as a hobby as he pursued football and other "cooler" sports.

Having lived in San Francisco for nearly a decade and being surrounded by so many great courses, the covid pandemic of 2020 brought him back to the golf course and he couldn't stay away. With the game on his mind more often than not, he brought GUTTA Golf to life in late 2022.

With so many amazing golf brands paving the way, he saw an opportunity to educate the modern golfer on the history of the game. "We want to create clothes that you wear proudly on & off the course and to educate you on just how great the history of golf is along the way."

Significance of the gutta percha golf ball

The gutta percha golf ball was a significant invention in the history of golf. It replaced the feathery golf ball, which had been the standard for over 300 years. The gutta percha ball was made from the sap of the gutta-percha tree, which is native to Southeast Asia. It was much more durable than the feathery ball, and it could be mass-produced at a much lower cost. This made golf more affordable and accessible to a wider range of people.

The gutta percha ball also had better performance characteristics than the feathery ball. It flew farther and straighter, and it was less affected by wind. This led to a change in the way the game was played, with golfers taking more risks and hitting the ball harder.

The gutta percha ball was the standard golf ball for over 50 years, until it was replaced by the Haskell ball in 1898. The Haskell ball had a rubber core, which made it even more durable and aerodynamic. However, the gutta percha ball still played a major role in the development of golf, and it is considered to be one of the most important inventions in the history of the game.

Here are some of the key advantages of the gutta percha golf ball over the feathery golf ball:

  • Durability: Gutta percha is a much more durable material than feathers, so gutta percha balls were less likely to break or deform when hit. This made them more playable in all weather conditions, and it also extended their lifespan.

  • Cost: Gutta percha was much cheaper to produce than feathers, so gutta percha balls were more affordable for the average golfer. This helped to popularize the game of golf and made it more accessible to a wider range of people.

  • Performance: Gutta percha balls were also more aerodynamic than feathery balls, so they flew farther and straighter. This led to a change in the way the game was played, with golfers taking more risks and hitting the ball harder.

The main disadvantage of gutta percha golf balls is that they were susceptible to shrinkage. This was caused by the evaporation of the volatile oils in the gutta percha. As the ball shrank, it became more difficult to control, and it could also crack or deform. This led to the development of the Haskell ball, which had a rubber core that was less susceptible to shrinkage.

Overall, the gutta percha golf ball was a significant invention that helped to revolutionize the game of golf. It was more durable, affordable, and aerodynamic than the feathery golf ball, and it led to a change in the way the game was played. The gutta percha ball played a major role in the development of golf, and it is considered to be one of the most important inventions in the history of the game.
